Trigram's FAQs

What I Ching translation does trigram use? A modern English translation from Wilhelm's original german version.

What difference does have this version compared to Cary F. Baynes translation? Trigram's translation is based on the original german Wilhelm's and chinese texts, using modern AI/ML techniques to create a modern English version easier to understand.

Can I import other translations? Not possible at this moment. I recommend using trigram in conjunction with your favourite I Ching book or interpretation, my two personal favourites are The complete I Ching by Taoist Master Alfred Huang and I Ching: Walking your path, creating your future by Hilary Barrett.

Will trigram support more languages other than English? Not at this moment. It may depending on user demand, or external support.

How can I add notes to my readings? Adding notes into the readings is a feature currently in development. It will be available in the next release.

How can I export my readings? You can create journal backups inside your app, in case you delete an entry by mistake. But you can't export the journal at this moment.

How can I import readings? You can't import readings from other apps, but you can add external readings flipping the external reading switch when you add a new entry.

I preffer coins or yarrows, can I save them in trigram? Of course, trigram lets you save your external readings, just flip the external reading switch whenever you add a new reading.

What divination method uses trigram internally? Short answer: Yarrow stalks method.

Long answer: Trigram does not simply implement the yarrow stalk system with random number generators. It uses an algorithm that respects the same probabilistic chances of the yarrow stalks method, transparently for the user, offering the same accurate readings at lightspeed. Precisely because of its speed, it is always good idea to meditate before using the app.

I Ching FAQ

What is the I Ching? The Yijing or I Ching is among the oldest classic texts from the Chinese culture, originally a divination manual from the Zhou Dynasty, around 1000-750 BC.

How should I use the I Ching? It's a divination manual. It's advisable to meditate before and during the whole process. After meditation, you formulate a question related to some matter you want advice for. You'll obtain an Hexagram with zero, one or multiple moving lines. If there are moving lines, those moving lines transform the result hexagram into the relating hexagram that complements your answer.

The I Ching is a complex book that requieres time and study to understand. There are good books out there for beginners (and veterans). One of the best places to start is I Ching with Clarity. Wonderful site with plenty of resources and a quite large community.

Important matters like illnesses or life-threatening situations, shouldn't be delegated to divination. Always follow the instructions and recommendations of Specialists (Medics, Police, etc).

Any tips for asking good I Ching questions? Ask only one question. It's always prefered to ask for advice than a prediction. Try to be precise and avoid yes/no or vague questions. Some examples:

What can I do to improve ...? best way to ..? What do I need to know about ...? How could I ...?
